A synergy between Luca and Penelope came into being that made it possible for the two art forms to meet and develop a connection. The two worked together on a performance during Penelope’s solo exhibition at the Museo Marco in Rome in 2019 and at meetings with the public for the presentation of the poet’s books. Luca Gamberini dedicated a poem to Penelope’s artistic research and Penelope transformed it into StarGate artwork.

The meaning underlying the words used in Penelope’s work allude to the universality of language and the world. The word, fast and immediate, is what defines the Universe around us. The word occurs and, at the moment it leaves our mouth it gives a name to things and consequently implicates existence. The word is specific, it belongs to different languages but expresses meanings that are however universal. Humanity expresses itself in different ways depending on its particular culture, languages lead to different events that however occur the world over. As Jung theorised, the world is regulated by a collective unconsciousness that represents a universal psychological container. Jung went beyond Freud’s personal unconscious theories and theorised the bipartite nature of the human unconscious: one part is personal, the other is common to all living beings and manifests itself simultaneously in the Universe.

Since ancient times these two disciplines – visual art and poetry have been intertwined, weaving a fertile dialogue often combining with each other. Think of modern visual poetry as an example of contamination between languages: by interacting, the word gives a visual sign and the image takes on a mental dimension. Master of this technique was the futurist Filippo Tommaso Marinetti with his “words in liberty”, terms arranged in a harmonic and unusual way that also emphasise their meaning, thanks to shrewd typographic freedom.

Labyrinth

[/vc_column_text][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”10″][vc_separator type=”transparent” thickness=”10″][vc_column_text]The labyrinth is the symbol of a path to follow, a journey but, above all, a change. The labyrinth is where one gets lost in physical terms only then to rediscover oneself. Just as Ulysees gets lost among the waves to discover himself at the deepest level beyond a boundless loss of his consciousness, through myriad adventures.

Carl Gustav Jung said people seeing a labyrinth in a dream are symbolically seeking their way through the twists and turns of life to find themselves. This complex, disorienting architecture conceals for the person entering it, the danger of remaining trapped there but, at the same time, the challenge of finding a clever way out. Entering a labyrinth is a challenge with oneself, a journey of change that one experiences in isolation without being conditioned by the outside world. In

Michael Ende’s «Neverending Story», on which the artist has drawn liberally in her works, the main character does just this: he loses himself in fantastic, new worlds, moves, knows and is involved in thrilling adventures and returns from his travels completely different.

The labyrinth is a place unknown where the desire is to escape, it is like a bad habit or bad behaviour at an unconscious level. It is a jumble, a tangled thread that needs to be untangled, a problem that must be solved intelligently that will change into a solution: a path on which one begins feeling lost and finishes by acquiring awareness and clarity.
