Cosmic Structures – Correspondences
From far, a simple watercolor, from close, a group of words. From a first sight, they seem the constellations and stars names connected by thin lines, then other words appear: pace (“peace” in Italian), fama (“fame” in Italian), logos (“word” and “thought” in ancient Greek), lutto (“mourning” in Italian)… and in the moment the viewer reads all the words, the painting connects the macro cosmos to the micro cosmos.
A series of watercolors whose tints have been purposely thickened so as to deepen and intensify the effect of looking through a window towards the cosmos. The watercolor technique, here enhanced with pencil and ink, is pushed to the limits of full-bodied richness by the addition of other material, giving it a 3-dimensional effect.
The presence of stars in Penelope’s works speaks of rupture: placing everyday objects side by side, using traditional techniques and not the presence of stars, is an invitation to break with convention, open a third mental dimension, a window through which to view the world upside down, putting human activity into perspective, (re)dimensioning it from the mental delusions we have been living in since birth. This “practice of relativity”, accompanied by the “theory of relativity” in the broader sense, makes sense not only philosophically, but also socially, politically and anthropologically. The fulcrum of her reflections lies in the words of Carl Sagan in his book “Pale Blue Dot, ” a scientific treatise which has opened the doors of science to speculation by society at large, rather than just as an end in itself.
The redimensioning of society, considering everything from a different perspective, research into primordial structures, to redefine the responsibilities of human beings within the space-time dimension they inhabit.
Da lontano, un semplice acquerello, da vicino un gruppo di parole. A prima vista sembrano nomi di costellazioni e stelle collegati da linee sottili, poi compaiono altre parole: pace, fama, logos (“parola” e “pensiero” greco antico), lutto… e nel momento in cui lo spettatore legge tutte le parole, il dipinto collega il macrocosmo al microcosmo.
Una serie di acquerelli carichi di colori appositamente addensati per infondere la massima profondità e intensità a finestre illusorie sul Cosmo. La tecnica dell’acquerello, in cui convivono anche la grafite e l’inchiostro, viene spinta all’estremo della sua corposità, con interventi materici che aggiungono la terza dimensione.
La presenza delle stelle nelle opere di Penelope ha un’intenzione di rottura: accostare a oggetti di uso quotidiano e a tecniche tradizionali e più innovative la presenza delle stelle è un invito a rompere le convenzioni, ad aprire una terza dimensione mentale. Si crea così una finestra che capovolge il punto di vista, che relativizza le azioni umane sulla Terra, ridimensionandole rispetto all’illusione mentale in cui viviamo dalla nascita. Questa “pratica della relatività”, accostata alla “teoria della relatività” in senso più allargato, ha un senso non solo filosofico, ma anche sociale, politico, antropologico. Fulcro della sua riflessione sono le parole di Carl Sagan in “Pale Blue Dot”, il saggio di divulgazione scientifica che ha aperto le porte della scienza a una speculazione allargata alla società, non fine a se stessa.
Un ridimensionamento dell’Umanità, uno spostamento di attenzione, una ricerca delle strutture primigenie, per ridefinire la responsabilità dell’essere umano nello spazio tempo in cui è.
